Waxing lyrical: Solomon Grundy in Batman – fans discuss how @danielcudmore measures up

Usually we dismiss most idle gossip that circulates on the internet but this piece managed to capture my attention. The article in question is written by “ecksmanfan” the owner of comic book fan site GeekBoyMovieNews and looks at the possible casting of villain Solomon Grundy from Batman.

Grundy is a zombie super villain in the    DC Comics Universe.  His abilities  include Superhuman strength,  durability, endurance, and regeneration  as well as the ability to come back to  life.

Basically, he would amble around as a  ”brainless brute” and would  communicate using a mixture of  incomprehensible groans and grunts.  Me Solomon. You Batman.

ANYWAY.

Ecksmanfan has included Dan in his list  of actors whom he would potentially  cast and while it follows along the vein  of stereotypical type casting, there is  something unique about this list. Most  of the people on it have only starred in  one movie and most of them … are (or  were)  professional wrestlers?

The first contender is Tyler Mane of X-Men fame (Sabretooth). Mane is 6’9 – obviously, Grundy is a character reminiscent of the Hulk in regard to body type – and has previously starred in the Rob Zombie remake of the Halloween films. Mane started out as  wrestler Big Sky back in WCW in the late 90′s.  Typically, he doesn’t play a lot of speaking parts – buying into the stereotypical type behemoth casting ploy.

Ralf Moeller is one of the more  serious suggestions.

Moeller portrayed Conan  in the  television series of the  same  name from the mid 90′s. Ralf  stands at 6’5″ and is no stranger  to action films.

Ralf  has acted in films like  ”Gladiator,” “Pathfinder” and  ”The Scorpian King” and if cast,  would probably deliver a  performance that everyone else  could learn from.

Next on the list was Dan.

In the author’s words:

“Daniel Cudmore, known for playing Colossus in the “X-Men” films and has recently starred as Felix in “Twilight: New Moon.” Again, not much in terms of speaking parts, but the dude is huge! Standing at 6’8″ and well over 200 pounds, he is rather imposing. As far as his acting abilities go, he is improving and could use work, but with the group of actors that star in the Batman films, he’d have some great mentors.”

Yes, well, DUH. Dan is physically imposing (we’ll tell you just how much when he comes to Australia in April). Everyones a critic – his acting skills will improve overtime. Batman WOULD be an amazing opportunity for him. Let’s make it happen.

Sandwiched in between the others was Kevin Durand who played The Blob in Wolverine. Yeah. My thoughts exactly.

Kane is next. For those of you  who don’t watch WWE, Kane  plays a “monster” on a weekly  basis. At seven foot, 300  pounds, he’s acted in one film  ”See No Evil” where he basically  played an extension of his in  ring persona. Could he play this  character? Hell no. No offence  to the big man (I’m a fan of him  in the ring) but this is where the  post disintegrates in to “I’ve  run out of respectable choices  to suggest and am therefore  just going to name everyone who looks like a beast”.

The final choice here made me laugh.

Roll around on the floor laughing almost.

Ladies and gentleman .. the ROCK!

Another wrestler, one who has some acting under his belt (tights?) and who definitely made the list because he’s a big dude who has the potential to be scary.

Or he would if he hadn’t starred in both The Game Plan and The Tooth Fairy for Disney Pixar.  Any chance this guy had of intimidating anyone vanished faster than you could say “If you smeeeeelll … what the Rock … is cookin’!”

So there we have it.

If you’ve stuck with me long enough to read the entirety of this post, you’re probably still wondering what my point is. My point is this – Dan would make an awesome Solomon Grundy. The man could get some serious acting chops from working with the all star cast that usually litters the Batman franchise. He HAS been included on this list thanks to some stereotypical typecasting from fans.

Perhaps he should try his hand at becoming a pro-wrestler!

Either way, while everyone has to start SOMEWHERE, we would love to see Dan in a role where he isn’t playing a vampire that is supposedly one of the strongest of his kind or a mutant. Then again, I don’t necessarily want to see him playing some love sick transient either …

Got an opinion? Share it with us in a comment below and please don’t hold my appreciation of professional wrestling against me (Chris Jericho totally deserves that World Heavyweight Championship yo. He’s Canadian!)

Na na na na na na na na na na Batman!
